Welcome to Drawing 101! These classes are designed to introduce you to the fundamental principles of drawing and help you develop your skills as an artist. These classes are open to students of all levels, from complete beginners and those with prior experience.

Overarching Learning Objectives:

  1. Light and shadow: You'll learn how to create the illusion of three-dimensional form by understanding how light interacts with objects and how to create value using shading techniques.

  2. Anatomy: You'll learn how to draw anatomy starting with bones and layering on muscle. Study facial features and general proportions.

  3. Observation: You will learn to observe and analyze the world around you, paying attention to shapes, proportions, and details, and how to translate those observations onto paper. Draw from still life, photographs, and live models.

  4. Proportion and scale: You'll learn how to draw figures and objects accurately by understanding the relationship between their parts and the whole.

  5. Line and shape: We will cover the basics of line work and how to use it to create shapes, forms, and textures in your drawings.

  6. Perspective: You'll learn how to create the illusion of depth and space in your drawings using one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective. You'll experiment with different points of view, such as: high above, looking down; and low to the ground, looking up.

  7. Visual Cues: You'll learn several techniques that can be used to create depth between objects and their environments.

  8. Composition: You'll learn how to arrange the elements of your drawing to create a visually appealing, interesting, and balanced composition.

  9. Critique: You will learn how to both provide and receive critique in a constructive and positive way. During each workshop, you will have the opportunity to receive feedback on your work from the instructor and your peers. You may participate in group critiques to help you develop your skills and understanding of the craft.
